Amazon Green
Redesigning the user journey for locating, browsing, and purchasing sustainable merchandise within Amazon's mobile application and web interface with a focus on enhancing user experience through streamlined accessibility, efficiency, and conscientious design.
01
Background
Context- The paradigm of sustainability is increasingly influencing consumer purchasing decisions, with individuals prioritizing environmentally and socially responsible products. This shift is propelled by heightened awareness of climate change, resource depletion, and ethical considerations. As consumers seek out sustainable options, they expect seamless access to such products in their shopping experiences.
Amazon, as a global e-commerce giant, has already embraced sustainability initiatives across various aspects of its operations. From renewable energy investments to packaging innovations, Amazon has demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship. However, while the company holds sustainable values, the user flow for discovering and purchasing sustainable products on its platform often lacks coherence and efficiency. Users encounter challenges navigating through vast product offerings, resulting in frustration and potential disengagement from sustainable choices.
02
Research
Existing Solution- Amazon's current UX design for shopping sustainable products leads to a poor user experience due to difficulties in locating and navigating through the extensive range of sustainable offerings. Few filters and dedicated sections exist and those that do are tucked away and take too long to find and access. The lack of intuitive filters and dedicated sections specifically for sustainable products makes it challenging for users to identify and compare eco-friendly options effectively. Consequently, users may become frustrated or discouraged from pursuing sustainable choices, undermining their overall shopping experience and potentially impacting Amazon's sustainability goals.
Key Features- Amazon's "Climate Pledge Friendly" tag serves as a valuable tool for users seeking sustainable products within the platform. This tag indicates items that have met specific sustainability criteria established by Amazon, helping users make more informed purchasing decisions aligned with their environmental values.
Interviews- Through conducting interviews and user tests, I aimed to understand how Amazon's poor UX design affected individuals shopping for sustainable products. This process involved gathering insights directly from users about their experiences navigating the platform, identifying pain points, and uncovering specific challenges they encountered when seeking sustainable options.
03
Problem Statement
The current user experience (UX) design on Amazon lacks effective pathways for users to discover and purchase sustainable products. Leading to user frustration and discouragement from sustainable choices, undermining the overall shopping experience, and negatively impacting Amazon's sustainability goals.

Solution
The final UX design for Amazon Green integrates intuitive navigation that highlights eco-friendly products, prominently features sustainability certifications, and incorporates user-friendly filters for carbon footprint and recyclability. It emphasizes a seamless shopping experience with detailed product information on environmental impact, encouraging informed and conscious consumer choices toward a more sustainable lifestyle. The design also prioritizes transparency, fostering trust by showcasing the brand's commitment to sustainability through clear messaging and impactful visuals throughout the user journey.
06
Evaluation
Usability Testing- During usability testing of the Amazon Green redesign, users achieved a remarkable 100% success rate in navigating to sustainable products, accomplishing this task four times faster than before.
Findings- By implementing intuitive navigation paths and clear categorization of eco-friendly items, the redesign streamlined the user experience significantly, ensuring users could quickly find and engage with sustainable choices with ease and efficiency.
07
Results & Takeaways
The redesign of Amazon Green proved incredibly successful during usability testing, achieving a 100% success rate in users finding sustainable products and reducing the time taken to access them by fourfold. These results highlight the redesign's effectiveness in enhancing user satisfaction and promoting sustainable shopping practices.
If the Project Continued - I were to take this further, I would focus on enhancing the transparency of the certification process, ensuring that users have clear and accessible information about product sustainability credentials. Continued user testing and iterative refinement based on feedback would be essential to further optimize the user experience. Additionally, I would prioritize adding more graphic content to effectively market the redesign, using visuals to highlight its benefits and encourage broader adoption of sustainable shopping practices.
